Customer obsession has created a business environment of continual disruption. Constant change is forcing execs to recognize that traditional planning and delivery practices don’t sustain the ability to focus on strategy while delivering new capabilities. To adapt to an environment where change is the new normal, project management office (PMO) leaders and enterprise architecture (EA) strategists are expanding Agile methods, but scaling Agile to the enterprise requires significant process, organization, and cultural change. The clear benefits of agile development—better collaboration, incremental delivery, early error detection and the elimination of unnecessary work—have made it the default approach for many teams. Agile methods are also being adopted by systems engineering teams to deliver the same benefits. Some developers have questioned whether requirements fall into the category of unnecessary work, and can be cut down or even completely eliminated. Meanwhile, teams developing complex products, systems and regulated IT continue to have requirements-driven legacy processes. So how does requirements management fit in an agile world? This paper argues that requirements management can bring significant value to agile development in regulated IT and complex product development projects, and sets out the characteristics of an effective requirements management approach in an agile environment.

Agile methods have proven effective for software development and have grown in popularity across a number of software disciplines. Agile methods build capabilities using an iterative approach, as opposed to traditional approaches where requirements are defined early and designs are completed in full before a single line of code is written. Agile incrementally defines requirements with priorities, partial component designs and working systems that evolve through iterations called sprints. The question remains, however: Do the 12 agile principles apply to more than just software? Agile principles are in line with lean management’s approach. Given that, it seems as though agile principles should directly apply beyond software development. However, the answer is not straightforward, because differences between software and physical components affect how agile is applied. Let’s explore how agile can be applied in light of these differences.

Today’s malware authors continue to increase their capabilities faster than security solutions can adapt to them. Whether it’s changing their attacks or hiding malicious code within web pages, it’s more difficult to identify legitimate network traffic. With first-generation network security devices, it is nearly impossible to defend against today’s threats. The situation will get worse before it gets better. Adversaries now utilize agile development and testing methods to develop their malware, they test new malware against the latest security software to increase effectiveness. Next-generation network security devices are emerging that provide the visibility and situational context required to meet today’s threats. These solutions use security automation to provide a sophisticated solution that is both lightweight and agile

Agile methods have become increasingly popular because they empower organizations to more quickly address emerging opportunities, to better ensure accurate fulfillment of functional requirements and to significantly enhance team productivity. Many organizations, however, are hesitant to employ agile methods for their safety-critical systems—since they have serious concerns about compromising those systems and thereby exposing themselves to completely unacceptable consequences.IBM Rational Chief Evangelist Bruce Powel Douglass explains how best practices for project management can assist organizations in experiencing all the benefits of agile development while continuing to maintain rigorous standards essential for successful delivery of safety-critical systems.
