A multi-cloud world is quickly becoming the new normal for many enterprises. But embarking on a cloud journey and managing cloud-based services across multiple providers can seem overwhelming. Even the term multi-cloud can be confusing. Multi-cloud is not the same as hybrid cloud. The technical definition of hybrid cloud is an environment that includes traditional data centers with physical servers, private cloud with virtualized servers as well as public cloud provisioned by service providers. Quite often, multi-cloud simply means that an organization uses multiple public clouds from many vendors to deliver its IT services. In other words, organizations can have a multi-cloud without having a hybrid cloud, or they can have a multi-cloud as part of a hybrid cloud.

Datacenter improvements have thus far focused on cost reduction and point solutions. Server consolidation, cloud computing, virtualization, and the implementation of flash storage capabilities have all helped reduce server sprawl, along with associated staffing and facilities costs. Converged systems — which combine compute, storage, and networking into a single system — are particularly effective in enabling organizations to reduce operational and staff expenses. These software-defined systems require only limited human intervention. Code imbedded in the software configures hardware and automates many previously manual processes, thereby dramatically reducing instances of human error. For many companies the appeal of the public cloud is very real. For tech startups, the cloud may be their only option, since many don’t have the capital or expertise to build and operate the IT systems their businesses need. Existing companies with established data centers are also looking at public clouds, to increase IT agility while limiting risk. The idea of building-out their production capacity while possibly reducing the costs attached to that infrastructure can be attractive. For most companies the cloud isn’t an “either-or” decision, but an operating model to be evaluated along with on-site infrastructure.
