In the emerging digital enterprise, there’s a good chance some application development will be taking place outside the information technology department. It’s not that the role of IT is in any way being diminished – in fact, IT managers are getting busier than ever, overseeing the technology strategies of their enterprises. Rather, the pieces are in place for business users to build and configure the essential business applications they need, on a self-service basis, with minimal or no involvement of their IT departments. As the world moves deeper into an era of ongoing disruption from digital players – be they startups, or teams within established enterprises – technology has become an essential part of every job, from the boardroom to the boiler room. Accordingly, the discipline of IT is no longer confined to the data center or development shop. Many business managers and professionals are building, launching or downloading their own applications to achieve productivity and respond

Reconstructing resource management tools to simplify tasks, drive collaboration and facilitate action. People who use technologies at home expect the same ease of use and intuitiveness for the tools they use in the workplace. But enterprise tools aren’t keeping up with the pace of change. Many product and portfolio management (PPM) solutions force resource managers to create entire workflows or navigate through multiple screens just to see the fundamental component of resource management—what their people are working on. Resource managers also cite shortcomings such as no simple way to perform everyday tasks, communicate in context with others, drill down into key information, narrow the field of resources and forecast financials and model outcomes.

And forecasts are only good if they reflect current reality—not the reality of two, three or more quarters ago. Enter “continuous planning.” With a methodology for forecasting at frequent intervals throughout the year, continuous planning “enables managers to see trends, patterns, and ‘breaks in the curve’ long before their competitors, and thus make better informed decisions regarding products and markets.” In this free online webinar, speakers Jim Collins & Guy Jones will explain how continuous planning keeps you in touch with current reality - and one step ahead of competitors. For many companies, language barriers increase as business globalization becomes the norm rather than the exception. Perhaps a call center agent cannot handle customer contact in an unfamiliar language. Or a manager travels to a face-toface meeting only to sit across a conference table from clients wanting to speak in their own native language. Even within your organization, teams across global geographies must collaborate to achieve collective goals, but language barriers often stand in their way. Meanwhile, HR leaders are tasked with recruiting and retaining top talent and L&D managers must align programs with business goals. Each of these scenarios and areas of responsibility have something in common: A clear need for company-sponsored training to develop employees’ language proficiency so they can engage successfully with colleagues and customers anywhere. Thousands of learners were surveyed about the impact of language training with Rosetta Stone® business solutions.1 Results show

With the current state of the economy, IT executives are being asked to stretch their budgets in order to keep their businesses profitable. In 2008, Median IT spending per user fell to $6,667 from the previous year's $7,397, according to Computer Economics. This represents a 6.2% reduction, consistent with the fact that IT managers were supporting an increasing number of users without corresponding increases in IT spending. IT spend continued to decline in 2009 and uncertainty and caution is still prevalent in 2010.

For the typical enterprise, the volume of data that needs to be managed and protected is growing at roughly 40% per year. Add to that the performance requirements of new applications and the demands for instant response time, always-on availability, and anytime-anywhere access. With such demands, data center managers face storage challenges that cannot be addressed using traditional, spinning-disk technology.

As more enterprises adopt technologies such as cloud, mobile, and analytics to help achieve strategic competitive advantage, CIOs and IT managers must support business-critical processes at a very high level across the enterprise. At the same time, IT organizations must manage complex hybrid IT infrastructures that include both cloud and on-premises technologies from multiple vendors and support providers. IDC believes that to tackle these challenges, IT organizations should look to support providers for comprehensive offerings to help optimize IT operations and improve the efficiency of IT service delivery. In addition, IDC recommends that IT organizations looking to manage rapid change in today’s IT landscape consider support providers with a record of innovative support services and a focus on advanced technology in support delivery.

The Time for the Hybrid WAN IT has gone through a significant evolution over the past decade. Virtualization has changed the entire face of the data center, the network edge has become predominantly wireless and consumer devices reign supreme. However, one of the few areas of IT that has yet to evolve is the corporate wide area network (WAN). Managing the WAN is something network managers have always struggled with because WAN speeds are typically an order of magnitude, or more, slower than local area networks (LANs).

Too remedial. Too retrospective. Too static. Too irrelevant to the team leader. Too time-consuming. Such are the complaints heard repeatedly about Performance Management and Engagement systems. And these don’t even touch on the biggest problem of all: current systems produce a tidal wave of unreliable data. The ratings they yield are based on the notion that, with enough time and training, managers (and peers) can become reliable raters of other people’s skills and competencies. Sadly, that’s not true. A large body of research reveals: 61% of your manager’s rating of you is a reflection of the manager, not of you. Your organization, apparently unaware of this, then persists on paying you, training you, and promoting you—and everyone else in the organization—based on these flawed ratings.
