Around-the-clock global operations, data growth, and server virtualization all together can complicate protection and recovery strategies. They affect when and how often you can perform backups, increase the time required to back up, and ultimately affect your ability to successfully restore. These challenges can force lower standards for recovery objectives, such as reducing the frequency of backup jobs or protecting fewer applications, both of which can introduce risk. High-speed snapshot technologies and application integration can go a long way toward meeting these needs, and they have quickly become essential elements of a complete protection strategy. But snapshot copies have often been managed separately from traditional backup processes. Features like cataloging for search and retrieval as well as tape creation usually require separate management and do not fully leverage snapshot capabilities. To eliminate complexity and accelerate protection and recovery, you need a solution

Today, nearly every datacenter has become heavily virtualized. In fact, according to Gartner as many as 75% of X86 server workloads are already virtualized in the enterprise datacenter. Yet even with the growth rate of virtual machines outpacing the rate of physical servers, industry wide, most virtual environments continue to be protected by backup systems designed for physical servers, not the virtual infrastructure they are used on. Even still, data protection products that are virtualization-focused may deliver additional support for virtual processes, but there are pitfalls in selecting the right approach. This paper will discuss five common costs that can remain hidden until after a virtualization backup system has been fully deployed.

Case study Diamond Foods’ Diamond of California® nuts are household staples for shoppers across the U.S. But constantly filling grocery store shelves with snacks requires intricate supply chain management that relies on critical business data, including complex spreadsheets and enterprise resource planning files, to keep production and deliveries on schedule. “If our critical servers go down or we lose important data on employee laptops, it has a direct impact on our bottom line,” says Kentrell Davis, Senior Client Support Services Analyst at Diamond Foods.

Old Dutch Foods, known for its broad selection of snack foods in the midwest United States and Canada, was struggling to get the right products to the right places at the right time. Its data center included outdated physical servers, and batch processing meant that inventory would not be updated until the end of the day as opposed to real time. In addition, recovering from power outages and disk failures could frequently take up to two weeks. To modernize its data center, Old Dutch Foods invested in EMC Converged Infrastructure. The fast and easy deployment of two VCE VBlock® systems running JD Edwards, MS Exchange, mobile device apps, and operation of a backup site with replicated applications and data. This enhanced the IT department's responsiveness to the business, allowed them to shift to real-time inventory, and reduced CapEx and OpEx costs. Operations were simplified by reducing person-hours needed for infrastructure maintenance by 75 percent.

IT admins tasked with restoring servers or lost data during a disruption are consumed with a single-minded purpose: successful recovery. But it shouldn’t take an adverse event to underscore the importance of recovery as part of an overall backup strategy. This is especially true with large datasets. Before you consider how you’re going to back up large datasets, first consider how you may need to recover the data. Variables abound. Is it critical or non-critical data? A simple file deletion or a system-wide outage? A physical server running onsite or a virtual one hosted offsite? These and a handful of other criteria will determine your backup and disaster recovery (BDR) deployment. What do we mean by large? A simple question with a not-so-simple answer. If your total data footprint is 5 TB or more, that’s considered large. But what kind of data is it? How many actual files are there? How frequently do they change? How much can they be compressed? It’s likely that two different 5 TB en

For a backup solution to be considered flexible, it needs to satisfy several key business requirements. It should integrate seamlessly with any servers you’re running and provide full support for all the applications your business uses. It should enable you to protect assets in different parts of the country or overseas. And it should let you manage and monitor backups from anywhere. A flexible backup solution gives you everything you need to protect the technology investments you make now and in the future. So instead of having to buy multiple solutions to support your changing needs, you can have a single solution that adapts to fit your environment. We call that flexible deployment.

For all organizations, server and component-level crises are unfortunate inevitabilities. Likewise, the need of end-users to revert to previous file versions is a common occurrence due to predicaments large and small. Recognizing these realities, ESG consistently recommends that organizations consider an approach to data protection that is broader than what backup alone can provide

One of the fundamental decisions in the design of data centers, server rooms and network closets is which uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems to use. You cannot be certain that the power you receive from your local utility will be suitable for your equipment, or that it will always be available. And even when you are receiving good-quality power from the utility, equipment inside your facility (such as electric motors) can introduce power problems. A network/server UPS system conditions input power 24x7 to ensure that your equipment always receives reliable power and protection from damaging and disruptive power problems. A network/server UPS system also supports your equipment during power failures, providing enough battery backup runtime to outlast shorter outages. During longer outages, the UPS system will provide enough runtime to save files and gracefully shut down systems or to ensure that equipment is powered until standby generators are ready to support the load.
