Today, nearly every datacenter has become heavily virtualized. In fact, according to Gartner as many as 75% of X86 server workloads are already virtualized in the enterprise datacenter. Yet even with the growth rate of virtual machines outpacing the rate of physical servers, industry wide, most virtual environments continue to be protected by backup systems designed for physical servers, not the virtual infrastructure they are used on. Even still, data protection products that are virtualization-focused may deliver additional support for virtual processes, but there are pitfalls in selecting the right approach. This paper will discuss five common costs that can remain hidden until after a virtualization backup system has been fully deployed.

" One thing is clear: the old way of running IT just won’t work in the new business environment.Truth is, preparing your IT department (and your company) to be agile, cost-efficient, metrics-driven, and flexible will require a change in how you operate. To support new business processes, you would do well to turn to a converged system, like HP ConvergedSystem for Virtualization. In this paper, we look at the greatest challenges faced by IT departments, and how traditional configurations, processes, and organizations are poorly-equipped to handle today’s workplace. We discuss the benefits of converged systems that are engineered to handle virtualized workloads. Finally, we look at HP ConvergedSystem for Virtualization as a simple and effective way for businesses to optimize their data center infrastructure and processes to better meet business needs."

The momentum of cloud adoption continues to grow for virtualized workloads. This year’s survey showed that 41% of respondents are now running virtual machines (VMs) in the cloud, up from 31% only a year ago. Furthermore, 90% of respondents are currently running, or plan to run, VMs in the cloud in this year, indicating a strong trend towards moving virtual workloads to the cloud. The majority of respondents (59%) plan to leverage AWS for these workloads, with 25% of those planning to use VMware Cloud (VMC) on AWS.

Businesses receive a number of benefits from running their IT operations within virtualized cloud environments, including: automation, economics and efficieny. Yet, as more mission-critical applications and workloads are run within cloud environments, IT staff lack the means for effective management. Businesses need new tools that meet cloud-era demands and deliver the same benefits as cloud computing itself: automation, economics and efficiency.

Today's datacenter networks must better adapt to and accommodate business-critical application workloads. Datacenters will have to increasingly adapt to virtualized workloads and to the ongoing enterprise transition to private and hybrid clouds. Pressure will mount on datacenters not only to provide increased bandwidth for 3rd Platform applications such as cloud and data analytics but also to deliver the agility and dynamism necessary to accommodate shifting traffic patterns (with more east-west traffic associated with server-to-server flows, as opposed to the traditional north-south traffic associated with client/server computing). Private cloud and legacy applications will also drive daunting bandwidth and connectivity requirements. This Technology Spotlight examines the increasing bandwidth requirements in enterprise datacenters, driven by both new and old application workloads, cloud and noncloud in nature. It also looks at how Cisco is meeting the bandwidth challenge posed by 3rd

Virtualization was supposed to be the disruptive technology that saved IT. The cost savings from consolidation and the ease at which applications can be deployed promised to vastly improve delivery of IT services, free up IT staff to work on other projects, and not strain budgets. Unfortunately, lack of insight into IT resource status in highly virtualized environments and the complexity of the interactions between server, storage, and network elements have added to IT staff manual workloads and led most companies to dedicate too much time to operations and not enough time to innovation. This basically negates the major benefits of virtualization.

In June 2011, IBM commissioned Forrester Consulting to examine the total economic impact and potential return on investment (ROI) that enterprises may realize by deploying Storwize V7000. The purpose of this study is to provide readers with a framework to evaluate the potential financial impact of Storwize V7000 on their organizations. Storwize V7000 is a virtualized storage system designed to consolidate block and file workloads into a single storage system for simplicity of management, reduced cost, highly scalable capacity, performance, and high availability.

Walk past your data center, and you might hear a soft, plaintive call: “Feed me, feed me…” It is not your engineers demanding more pizza. It is your servers and applications. And the call is growing louder. Mobile and virtualized workloads, cloud applications, big data, heterogeneous devices: they are all growing in your business, demanding previously unimagined capacity and performance from your servers and data center fabric. And that demand is not slacking. Your employees, applications, and competitive advantage increasingly depend on it. Those servers and applications need to be fed. And if you have not started planning for 40 gigabits per second (Gbps) to the server rack, you will need to soon.

To accomplish this mission, you need an infrastructure platform that can be highly optimized for today’s and tomorrow’s virtualized workloads to provide operational simplicity that allows you to move at the speed of business. Unfortunately, a traditional infrastructure won’t get you there. A siloed environment requires too many tools and manual processes, which creates unnecessary complexity. That complexity, in turn, causes downtime, slows service delivery, and drains your IT staff productivity.

So far, most data centers have virtualized their least-critical workloads as a matter of basic cost containment. Virtualizing mission-critical applications is still forthcoming for the majority, though, largely due to infrastructural concerns. Complicating matters is the shift in IT purchasing decisions from IT to business management. Integrated Computing Platforms (ICPs), private cloud computing, and public cloud services all leverage virtualization to achieve a number of IT and business goals, including increased ROI, reduced OpEx, and business process improvement. Now more than ever, it makes sense to explore the benefits of ICPs. Find expert data center considerations here.

Chuck Dubuque - Product Marketing Manager, Red Hat Server and desktop virtualization technologies, which bring cost and agility advantages to enterprise IT, have become mainstream in most datacenters. However, after nearly 10 years, virtualized servers still only represent about 30 percent of x86 production workloads due to technology limitations and the expense of proprietary virtualization platforms. In this session, Chuck Dubuque will cover: * The benefits of datacenter virtualization * Technologies in the open source community that will enable pervasive virtualization * The move to the cloud * The particular advantages of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and the Red Hat subscription model
