Over a decade ago, mobile telephony entered the enterprise through the back door: employees who could afford mobile phones occasionally used them for business; specific business units budgeted for employee mobiles and then procured them locally; policies surrounding the usage of mobile phones for work were - where they existed at all - haphazard; there was little means of policy enforcement; and in no case were these mobile phones integrated into a business's fixed telephony strategy, let alone its IT strategy. This stands in sharp contrast to other office technologies, such as PCs, faxes, and copiers.

The number of mobile devices managed by enterprises increased 72 percent from 2014 to 2015. This onslaught of technology such as notebooks, smartphones, tablets, watches and gadgets has transformed the way users work. These devices provide users in just about every sector with access to the information and tools they need to do their jobs, wherever and whenever they need them. They’re free to work at their desks, in conference rooms, while visiting clients on the road or during a child’s baseball practice. They can input data directly into a medical chart, an order form or an inspection report, rather than doubling their work by transcribing handwritten notes later in the day.

Virtualization is one of the most highly demanded of all IT projects this decade because it enables enterprises to reduce capex and opex costs and at the same time increase business efficiency and agility. However, implementing, supporting, and managing virtualization can often be difficult tasks, especially as deployments increase in scale and complexity and impact more areas of the datacenter. These more complex infrastructures often require highly skilled engineers with in-depth business knowledge and systems management capabilities. Projects such as infrastructure optimization and automation initiatives for self-service provisioning are key because they enable enterprises to streamline business processes and utilize cloud strategies and mobility solutions. IDC shows how partnering with experts who can implement, optimize, support, and manage virtualized environments may be the right course of action. As the "bring your own device" (BYOD) trend sweeps across the business world, it raises a huge management challenge for many companies. It changes who within an organization gets access to mobility. It also affects the way a business operates, with implications that go far beyond simply IT. BYOD presents new, fundamental questions about security, liability, and cost. Answers depend on two aspects of mobility management: device management policy and the technology used to fulfill and enforce a policy.

Historically in the enterprise, Macs have been managed separately from iOS devices in separate consoles, sometimes by different groups within IT. Traditional domain-joined management posed several problems for today’s modern enterprise. Nowadays, managing Macs like mobile devices means they can be configured over the air, without ever having to be domain-joined. That’s a major plus for global organizations, remote workers and companies who use contractors or freelancers. Unifying parallel device environments enables streamlined oversight, management and distribution of content across Macs and iOS devices. With AirWatch® Enterprise Mobility Management, IT can implement a BYOD program and policy for all device types, ensuring personal information remains private. IT has a consistent management experience for all device types and operating systems, enabling a single-pane-of-glass view of all endpoints in an enterprise.

We work at home. We take conference calls in the backseat of a taxi. We even tap out emails from 30,000 feet. Mobility is radically redefining the way we work, because it’s redefining where and when we can work. It’s why Keith Perske, executive managing director of workplace innovation for Collier’s, thinks it’s time to adopt a new description of the workplace: “Today’s workplace is an integrated set of locations, technology, programs and work practices that connect people and enable employees to contribute and be productive. That’s the new workplace definition.” And with the emergence of this modern workplace, users are expecting a mobile experience that’s simple, convenient, and a boon to their productivity. In order to deliver on these expectations, IT organizations are making business mobility a priority in their investment decisions. Which is why we’ve identified five potent mobility trends that warrant attention and also present opportunities to transform the enterprise
